Andrew Lloyd Webber Seeks an Avril Lavigne
Classic Time Mag Cover of Andrew Lloyd Webber
Andrew Lloyd Webber, the genius of Broadway, is thinking of Avril as he attempts to cast Dorothy in “Over the Rainbow,” a talent search series to find the star of his new show, “The Wizard of Oz.” Webber’s past achievements include “Phantom of the Opera,” “Evita” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” He’s won Emmys, Grammys and an Academy Award. He is now looking to cast one of his most ambitious projects yet, a version of “The Wizard of Oz” that goes a step beyond the musical, and he’s written at least a half-dozen songs in addition to the great music contained in the movie.
His search for a Dorothy to lead his show began in Scotland this week. The Sun did an article on his search. In it, he commented, “”I want a Dorothy with attitude! She’ll be more Avril Lavigne than Judy Garland.” He went on to say, “I don’t want to go for a Dorothy who’s all peaches and cream. Anyone like Avril Lavigne or a bit like Amy Winehouse or something along those lines would be great.”
